St. Claire Basketball: Golden State Warriors

My sixth and final season in the St. Claire basketball league was a terrible one. I was happy that I got a fresh start with a new team and our team seemed to be a descent one at the start. I was also happy with my role on this team since I was one of our best players. My coach designed most of the plays for me and I was excited to start the season. I felt good about this season and my confidence was high due to the success I had in the past few seasons. The reason this season was considered a terrible season was because I had a season ending injury at the mid way point. I was driving to the basket and my knee cap just gave out and I had to be helped off the court. The doctors said I had a torn meniscus and I was so mad that I had to sit out the rest of the year. My team finished off the season not playing well and we just missed making the playoffs. I felt even worse at the end of the season because my team did not make the playoffs and I felt that I was to blame. After the season was completely over, I found out from doctors that I would need surgery or a long period of rest and would not be able to play next season. I decided not to get the surgery and I ended my St. Claire Basketball career for good.

Detroit Lions - Roy Williams

Pro Bowl wide receiver Roy Williams of the Detroit Lions has been rumored to be traded this off season or by next season. These rumors have been brought up over and over again and have made Detroit Lion's fans in an uproar. He is a great athlete and receiver and is arguably the best player on the Lions. This team has been an extremely bad team for the last decade and the fans are waiting for drastic improvement right now. Trading your best player isn't a great start to trying to turn a troubled franchise around. Roy is also my favorite player in the NFL and I am hoping that they don't make this mistake by trading him away.

The reason I chose this topic to discuss in my blog is because I really enjoy watching him play every Sunday for the Lions. I think he is one of the few pieces that are a right fit for the Lions and a key aspect to a possible turnaround in the 2009 NFL season. I have always been a Detroit Lions fan but I am starting to get frustrated with watching them lose every single year. Their general manager Matt Millen and there owner Mr. Ford have not made any key improvements for a long time now. The Lions are in danger of losing many of their fans and something needs to be done soon.

Creative Nonfiction

The genre Creative Nonfiction has many different definitions and views. According to Bruce Dobler's Creative Nonfiction Compendium, creative nonfiction is that branch of writing which employs literary techniques and artistic vision usually associated with fiction or poetry to report on actual persons and events. Though only recently identified and taught as a distinct and separate literary genre, the roots of creative nonfiction run deeply into literary tradition and history. The genre, as currently defined, is broad enough to include nature and travel writing, the personal memoir and essay, as well as new journalism, gonzo journalism, and the nonfiction novel.

A man named Lee Gutkind, (who can be seen in the picture above) from the Creative Nonfiction Journal website, shared his view on what creative nonfiction actually was. He said that “I don’t know who actually coined the term creative nonfiction. As far as I know, nobody knows, exactly. I have been using it since the 1970s, although if we were to pinpoint a time when the term became “official,” it would be 1983, at a meeting convened by the National Endowment for the Arts to deal with the question of what, exactly, to call the genre as a category for the NEA’s creative writing fellowships. Initially, the fellowships bestowed grant money ($7,500 at the time; today, $20,000) to poets and fiction writers only, although the NEA had long recognized the “art” of nonfiction and been trying to find a way to describe the category so writers would understand what kind of work to submit for consideration”.

Another explanation and definition of creative nonfiction according to the website of the Creative Nonfiction Journal, the genre precisely describes what the form is all about. The word “creative” refers simply to the use of literary craft in presenting nonfiction that is, factually accurate prose about real people and events in a compelling, vivid manner. To put it another way, creative nonfiction writers do not make things up; they make ideas and information that already exist more interesting and, often, more accessible.

This general meaning of the term is basically acknowledged and accepted in the literary world; poets, fiction writers, the creative writing community in general understand and accept the elements of creative nonfiction, although their individual interpretation of the genre’s boundaries may differ. The essential point to acknowledge here is that there are lines and real demarcation points between fiction, which is or can be mostly imagination; traditional nonfiction (journalism and scholarship), which is mostly information; and creative nonfiction, which presents or treats information using the tools of the fiction writer while maintaining allegiance to fact. (Creative Nonfiction Journal Website, Lee Gutkind)

Creative nonfiction is not the same as an essay or a journalism type of style. Even though some people believe that they are similar, the concepts are different and that is why creative nonfiction is now its own genre. Lee Gutkind also stated that an “essay is the term used to describe this “artful” nonfiction, but it didn’t really capture the essence of the genre for the NEA or lots of other folks experimenting in the field. Technically, scholars, critics, and academics of all sorts, as well as newspaper op-ed reporters, were writing “essays,” although that was not the kind of work the NEA had in mind. Journalism didn’t fit the category, either, although the anchoring element of the best creative nonfiction requires an aspect of reportage. For a while the NEA experimented with “belles-lettres,” a misunderstood term that favors style over substance and did not capture the personal essence and foundation of the literature they were seeking. Eventually one of the NEA members in the meeting that day pointed out that a rebel in his English department was campaigning for the term “creative nonfiction.” That rebel was none other than Lee Gutkind.

MLB: Opening Game In Japan

The first game of the 2008 Major League Baseball season was played today in Japan. This game was between the Boston Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics. There was a total of 44,628 screaming fans in the Tokyo Dome. The game was actually televised in New York at 6:10 A.M. I did not get to catch the live showing but I did manage to see the repeat at 2:00 P.M. It was a great game and it was such a perfect match up that it went into extra innings. The Red Sox won the game 6 to 5 in 10 innings and the big performer of the game was Manny Ramirez. Manny had two doubles and four rbi's and had the key hit in the tenth inning to win the game for the Red Sox.

I really enjoyed watching the game but I didn't really like the way that the season opened up in Japan. I also didn't like how the two teams were asked to play a regular season game and now have to go back to exhibition games for the next week. I think that the MLB should have structured the schedule better and waited for this game until next week when everyone starts playing in the regular season. Even though I did not agree with the idea, I still enjoyed watching the game and I am sure that people all over the world who watched it enjoyed it as well. I can't wait for the regular season to finally start for all the teams.

St. Claire Basketball: Denver Nuggets

My fifth season in the St. Claire Basketball League was interesting. I came into the season in great shape and I practiced everyday in the off season. Everything seemed to be going great and it looked like I was in line for my best season by far. The team looked and played really good during practices but we just couldn't blend the techniques we learned during practice into the game. We started off the season winning our first few games but we ended up finishing the year with about a .500 record. Our coach was very laid back and that could have been a major reason why our team didn't achieve our expectations. We made the playoffs but we lost in the second round to a team that was not even that good. The match up was in our favor but we just got outplayed that day on the court. My stats were no better then average and it was just an average season overall at best. I am surprised I even remember much from this season because it was just such a boring season. This was the first time I didn't have fun while being in this league for four years.

St. Claire Basketball - L.A. Lakers

My fourth season in the St. Claire basketball league was a descent one. I was still on the Los Angeles Lakers and we were the returning champions. The one thing that I regret going into this season was that I was not in great shape. I got lazy and I stayed away from the game of basketball for the entire off season. Looking back now I guess that winning the championship made me a little lazy and took away my drive and passion for trying to winning it all since I already accomplished that goal.
My season stats were not that bad they were all about average stats and I played consistent every game. The problem was that my coach expected so much more out of me and felt that I was holding back. I really don't know what went wrong that season but I guess my heart wasn't into every game like it was in the past. Now that I think about it, maybe winning the championship was the downfall of my basketball career. My team ended up making the playoffs and winning the first round. We lost in the second round of the playoffs and the season was a big disappointment to everyone and especially our coach. As the season finished I had a feeling that the team might have decided to go in a different direction and trade me away. They felt that this team needed to be broken up since it seemed that we could not compete together at a high level anymore. A few weeks later I was informed that I have been traded to the Denver Nuggets and I was extremely disappointed on how my Laker career ended.

Detroit Lions: 2008 Off-Season

The Detroit Lions have always been my favorite team in football. I have liked them since I was about ten years old and my favorite player was their running back Barry Sanders. I have followed their off season moves and watched all of their games every year. I have even gone to a few games when they played New York teams in New York. I also have many Detroit Lions jerseys and they have recently just dropped one of my favorite players on the team. Running back Kevin Jones was released by the Lions a few days ago and it was a surprise to everyone outside of the Lions front office. I was very mad at this move since it did not make any sense to me. He was going to be the starter for the 2008 season and they have no backup plan as of right now. The only good that has come out of this 2008 off season for the Detroit Lions is the moves they made to improve their secondary. The Lions signed corner back's Brian Kelly, Leigh Bodden, and free safety Dwight Smith. These three defensive players should help out the Lions defense and I am glad that they signed them. Overall I would say that the Lion's 2008 off season was a descent one but could have been even better if they kept Kevin Jones. The 2008 NFL Draft is in a month from now and it will be interesting to see if the Lions decide to take a running back since they released Kevin Jones.

St. Claire Basketball

My third season in the St. Claire Basketball League was the most memorable and greatest achievement of mine in this league. I was in the eighth grade and I was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. We had a really good roster and all of the players on this team seemed to get along at first. The only problem was that our coach expected a lot from us. He held practices more then any other coach in the league and he was extremely hard to please. He wanted and expected all of his players to do well and preform at the level they were capable of. The only thing that I did not like was that my playing time at first was very low. I only played about half the game which was the minimum amount of playing time a athlete can get in this league. After awhile my coach realized that I was doing well and he let me play a little more. The time playoffs came, I was playing a lot and was a big part of the team. I was averaging about 10 points a game towards the end of the season and I was one of the leading scorers in the league. My Laker team made it all the way to the Championship game where we had to play the New York Knicks, which were by far the favorites to win it all. I was the smallest player on the court during the championship game but I had the most rebounds in the game. We ended up wining the championship game by only 2 points but it was a great and memorable game that I will never forget. I finally won a championship after two previous seasons of not making it to far in the playoffs and I was so happy. I ended up receiving the MVP and Team Player award. It was the best day of my basketball career in this league and I was glad to be apart of this Los Angeles Laker team.

NFL: 2008 Free Agency: Browns/Jets

The NFL free agency for the upcoming 2008 season has been very exciting. Their have been many moves and trades that occurred so far. A team that has made the most and biggest moves so far has been the Cleveland Browns. They have signed and acquired many new great talents. They revamped their defensive line by acquiring Shaun Rogers from the Detroit Lions and Corey Williams from the Green Bay Packers. They also signed former Patriots wide receiver Donte Stallworth who is a very underrated receiver. After all of these big moves, the Browns also resigned some key players from their 2007 season which were quarterback Derek Anderson and running back Jamal Lewis. With the 2008 free agency period almost over I would have to say that the Cleveland Browns are by far the winners so far. This team should continue to be on the rise in 2008 and could possibly make the playoffs.

Another team that went all out in the free agent market was the New York Jets. I wouldn't say that they had a great off season but I can say they got a lot of new talent. The free agents that they signed were Alan Faneca, Kris Jenkins, Calvin Pace, and Damien Woody. All of these players have talent but they over payed each one of them. These four players contracts total about 140 Million dollars with about 70 Million guaranteed. The New York Jets took a big risk in giving away all of that guaranteed money but it might pay off if their players preform to the high level they are capable of.
